The Honey Badger Way

Born fearless.
Built for community.

The honey badger holds the Guinness World Record for most fearless animal. Confronts cobras, ignores bee swarms, escapes every enclosure ever built, and has never once cared what anyone thinks.

We thought: that's exactly the kind of café Norwich deserves.

We took our bites. We went briefly limp — that's what happens. Then we got straight back up, finished what we started, and put the kettle on. We're on the ground floor. We guard the territory. Everyone is welcome.

Read the Chronicle The Two Floors

"We took every bite that came our way. We went briefly limp — it passes, it always passes — then got straight back up, looked whatever was trying to stop us directly in the eye, and ordered another coffee."

The anatomy of a Honeybadger

01
The Thick Skin
We've heard it all before
Honey badger skin is so tough and loosely attached that when a predator grabs it, it turns around inside its own hide and bites back. We've been told independent hospitality is a bad idea. We responded in kind.
02
Don't Care
Trend-proof since the Pliocene
The honey badger has not updated its approach in 10 million years. It has never once glanced at a branding deck or a competitor's Instagram. It eats what it wants, sleeps where it wants, and is magnificent. Same energy.
03
Eats Snakes
Takes on the big guys
Black mambas. King cobras. Puff adders. Gets bitten. Briefly collapses dramatically. Gets straight back up and finishes the meal. We admire this approach to adversity enormously and have applied it extensively.
04
The Honey Guide
Intuition leads to the good stuff
The real honey badger follows a small bird to the hive. Instinct, trust, a willingness to go wherever the good thing is. We follow our community, our suppliers, and whatever is beautiful this season.
05
Escape Artist
Can't be put in a box
Captive honey badgers use rocks as step-ladders to scale enclosures. One used a rake. We are not a chain, not a concept, not a category. We contain multitudes. We are leaving through the roof if necessary.
06
The Musk
Our scent is unmistakable
The honey badger's musk disorients entire bee swarms. Ours smells considerably better: roasting coffee, warm pastry, a hint of something from the bar. You'll know when you're here. It doesn't wash off easily.

"The honey badger takes a cobra bite, collapses theatrically, gets back up, and finishes its meal. We've been taking notes for years."

The Chronicle

How we got here

An honest account. Told in honey badger terms, which is the only way it makes any sense.

The Beginning
We found the burrow on Red Lion Street
One ground floor. One vision. Mediterranean food, honest coffee, Klimt on the walls, and a name that said everything about our attitude. Norwich didn't know what was coming.
Ground Floor · Claimed
The Biting Season
Then came the attacks
Every independent place has a biting season. Ours arrived wearing several different faces and came from multiple angles simultaneously — which is, if nothing else, very efficient.
Multiple bites · Multiple fronts
The Limp
We briefly went limp. It was fine.
This is a documented honey badger thing. After a cobra strike, the honey badger collapses for a few minutes. Looks dead. Is not dead. Has gone somewhere quiet to process the venom and formulate a response. We did the same.
Temporary · As promised
The Rising
We got back up and finished the meal
The honey badger always gets back up. That part is not optional. We opened the doors, made the coffee, put the music on, and were still here when everyone expected otherwise. We consider this our finest hour.
Still here · Still cooking
The Aslan Arrives
The lion took the first floor
The Aslan — the lion — moved to the first floor. Exclusive access. Not open to everyone. Up there it's a different world: quiet, curated, reserved for those who arrange it in advance. The honey badger noted this. The honey badger was not threatened. The honey badger has eaten lions before (metaphorically).
First Floor · By Arrangement
The Present
Ground floor. Doors open. Always.
The honey badger guards the ground floor. Protects the territory. Welcomes the community. Makes excellent coffee and occasionally dangerous cocktails. The Klimt murals remain unmoved. So do we. This is our corner of Norwich and you are very welcome in it.
Open · Thriving · Still Don't Care

"The ground floor is ours. It always has been. Every great independent place has a territory. This is ours. Come in."
